001 · Our story

Two decades on 1300 South. And we're still here.

TM Computers opened in 2004 on 1300 South in Salt Lake City. Back then, the neighborhood was a different place — fewer apartments, more bungalows, no Thirst Drinks next door yet. The shop has been on the same block ever since.

We started as a family business and we still are one. That matters because when you bring your computer here, you're handing it to the same people, year after year. The continuity is the point. When you call to ask about a repair we did in 2019, we still have the records. When something comes back under warranty, the person who fixed it the first time is still the one looking at it.

Salt Lake City has changed a lot since 2004. The tech corridor exploded. The valley grew. Chain electronics stores opened, closed, and got replaced by new chains. We've watched all of it happen from this corner of Liberty Wells while doing what we've always done: opening up computers and fixing them at the component level.

The work is the same now as it was twenty years ago, even if the devices are different. A Windows desktop in 2004 had failing hard drives, dead capacitors, and Trojans. A MacBook Pro in 2026 has failing SSDs, dead capacitors, and ransomware. The diagnostic discipline is identical. The patience required is identical. The honesty required is identical.

002 · What makes us different

A real workshop. Not a chain. Not a kiosk.

Most computer repair in 2026 happens at one of two extremes. On one end: chain stores like Geek Squad — fast turnover staff, scripted upsells, swap-the-whole-assembly repair model, and a strong push to sell you a new device whenever yours has any real problem. On the other end: mobile techs who come to your house with a USB drive and do basic software work.

We're a third thing: a real workshop. Microscope, microsoldering bench, hot air station, oscilloscope, multimeter, ultrasonic cleaner, parts inventory. The equipment that lets us actually fix things at the component level instead of swapping whole assemblies for ten times the price.

The trade-off is we're in-shop only. We don't drive to your house. We don't pick up your laptop. Our equipment doesn't travel and we don't pretend it does. You bring the device to us, we do the work properly in the workshop, you pick it up when it's ready. The drive is short from most of the valley — a few minutes for Liberty Wells residents, 15 minutes for the farther neighborhoods.

What you get for the trade-off: real diagnostic equipment, twenty years of experience, and a repair done correctly the first time. The same hands working on your device today are the hands that have been fixing computers in this city for two decades.

003 · How we work

Four principles. Twenty years of them.

Principle 01 — Honesty

If it's not worth fixing, we'll tell you

Some computers genuinely aren't worth the repair. When that's the case, we say so — and recommend what to do instead. We'd rather lose a repair sale than send you home with a $500 fix on a $300 machine.

Principle 02 — Depth

We fix what others give up on

Microsoldering, board-level diagnostics, dead motherboards, liquid damage. The work most shops won't touch is the work we do most. If a chain told you your laptop is "not repairable," we're the second opinion.

Principle 03 — Continuity

Same shop, same hands, same address

No franchise, no rotating staff, no overseas support. Twenty years on 1300 South means the technician who fixed your laptop in 2018 is still here. Warranty work, return customers, multi-year support — it's the same shop.

Principle 04 — Transparency

Free diagnostic, written quote, no surprises

Every repair starts with a free 10-minute diagnostic. We give you a written quote before any work. The quote is the price — not a starting figure that doubles by checkout. You know what you're paying before we touch the device.

Microsoldering Bench
004 · The workshop

The bench is the difference. Real tools. Real work.

Most of what makes us different is the equipment in this room. The microsoldering bench, the microscope, the hot air rework station, the oscilloscope and multimeters, the ultrasonic cleaner for liquid damage, the parts inventory built up over two decades.

This is the setup that lets us replace a single failed chip on a logic board instead of swapping the entire board. It's the setup that lets us trace a "dead" laptop back to a single blown component for $150 instead of declaring it totaled and pushing a $1,500 replacement.

You won't find this equipment at a chain store. They aren't set up for component-level work. We are.

005 · The work

Every laptop tells a story. We read it.

Every device that comes in starts the same way: opened up, examined, tested. Power delivery first. Storage second. RAM third. Motherboard last. The diagnostic discipline is what separates careful repair from guessing.

About half the laptops we see have already been to another shop. They've been told their device is "totaled" and they need a new one. Most of the time, they don't — they just need someone willing to open up the motherboard and find the actual broken thing.

That's twenty years of seeing the same patterns. Blown charging ICs, failed power management chips, dead surface-mount components, oxidized traces from liquid damage. The work is repetitive in the best way — we've seen this before, we know how to fix it.
